Hairstyles Makeovers

Add Side Swept Hair Bangs for a Simple Makeover

The best place to go if you are looking for a hairstyles makeover is to celebrity hairstyles galleries.  Celebrities typically have full time hair stylists that try to create the best look for their clients.  When it comes to celebrities, image is of utmost importance, so you can be certain that any hair style worn by a celebrity has been designed for the best possible appearance.

Some of the most popular makeover ideas come with adding hair bangs.  This is a very subtle makeover that doesn't require drastic changes to a cut.

Tips When Choosing Cornrow Styles For Women

If you are fond of watching hip-hop dancing then you probably noticed a common hairstyle among the dancers especially women. If you are wondering what hairstyle that is then you should know that what you are seeing is the cornrow styles for women. Are you wondering why it is called as such? It is because it is inspired by the corn in rows.

This style originated in Africa and it is popular to the Africans. It became famous worldwide when people from other races started using it as their hairstyle especially when hip-hop became popular and dancers wear the style. Having this type of hairstyle requires some professional hair braiding and because of its popularity nowadays it is not impossible to find hair parlors or salons doing the job.

If you want this type of hair then you should head of to the nearest salons. Look for the best hairstylist who can do it. Before you can have it, you have to select what type of braiding you want. There are three common types of cornrow. You can just select from these types depending on what type of occasion you would want to wear the hairstyle.

  1. If you want to wear it as an everyday hairdo then you can choose the circular cornrows. The braids are thin to medium in size which runs in complex circles. This style requires an expert professional because it is not easy to do.

  2. If you are heading off to some semi-formal to casual parties and you want a cornrow hairdo then you can choose the straight back type. The braids in this style run from front of the head going down to the nape. The braids are medium thick in size and it can be tied in a ponytail at the end or you can just have the braids can continued. This is an elegant type of the cornrow that it why it is perfect in many types of occasions.

  3. The last common type which is usually seen in women attending formal affairs is the Goddess braids. If you are watching films on Greek gods and goddesses, try to look at the women's hairstyle and you will see what the Goddess cornrow is. The braids are made thick and can run around the head in different styles while making the scalp more visible. This style is perfect for formal parties and events.

Upon choosing what style you want then have it as your hairdo. You can have it as a temporary style or a long-term style. If you want to make it last long then you should know how to take care of it. During bathing time, be sure to shampoo it carefully so that it won't damage. Be sure to wash up all sides so that dirt and dust won't accumulate on the braided stands.

Aside from careful shampooing, you can cover you hairdo with cloth before you go to bed. This will help prevent loosing of the braids and damaging the style. When you go out of the house you can add some hair gel to keep it together.

If you had your hair in braids then you should know how to take care of it. There are many procedures on how to care for cornrow styles for women. You can always do your own research or simply ask for tips from hairstylists. You can always check how to maintain the style and how to care for it.

I Want Her Hair: Goapele!
By Aisha I. Jefferson on Nov 29th 2010 12:00PM

"Once known for donning waist-skimming locs, Goapele is turning heads with a cornrow-design updo that is truly a work of art.

For those who may remember, on first sight Goapele's natural coiffure is a throwback to the chic braided styles that actress Cicely Tyson wore in '70s. But Goapele, whose father is South African, says the hair creations worn by the late South African singer Miriam Makeba married with styles typically worn on straighter hair served as inspirations for the look seen above -- think the bouffant hairstyles of the '50s or the teased and overly hair-sprayed 'dos of the '80s.

Although the look doesn't have a formal name, it's an artistic conception. "I like to kind of mimic styles you would do with straight hair because it looks so different when you do it with natural hair," says Goapele, who cut her hair four years ago into a short, cropped cut. "It's a way for me to keep things fun and interesting for me now that I've moved on from the locs. And it's a way for me to keep my braids unique."
The Oakland native, who received a lot of attention when she wore her hair locked, is now receiving much of the same type of notoriety for this hairstyle, which takes about nine hours to complete and another two or three hours to wrap. "The braids are so small. And she's patient and so steady," says hairstylist Anana Scott about the timely process.

If sitting for nine hours sounds challenging, Scott says bear in mind that the amount of time is relative and "depends on the thickness of the hair, the width, and sometimes length of the braids and how elaborate the style."

Goapele usually wears the updo for two to three weeks (she doesn't like for it to get fuzzy) and uses a dry shampoo like Organic Root Stimulator Herbal Cleanse ($6.39,Sallybeauty.com) to wash her scalp. She then wraps her hair at night with a silk scarf and moisturizes with Organic Root Stimulator Shea Butter Moisturizing Lotion ($8.29, Sallybeauty.com) or a Carol's Daughter Tui hair oil ($8.50, Carolsdaughter.com).

"As for thread wraps, the design is taut– but not unbearable. It will last through washing, swimming, etcetera, but make sure for both braids and wraps that you keep the scalp moist with light oil after washing," Scott advises. How does it affect the edges? As a way to preserve her edges and avoid any scalp stress, Goapele sports two-strand twists in between getting this style. " I really like for the edges of my hair to get a break for about one and a half to two weeks," she says.

Thread-wrapping isn't a new style for Goapele, however. Scott used to style and thread-wrap the singer's hair when she was a little girl. And even though Scott learned this technique from her Mississippi-bred grandmother, who used do a similar wrap style with women's hair decades ago, she says it's a technique that definitely has its roots in Africa.

"I am glad to say not all of the culture was stripped from us during the dark years!" Scott says.

Watch the how-to video to see how Scott creates this look on Goapele."

How Long Does Hair Need To Be For Cornrows To Stay In Well

A great look that many love is cornrows. But there is the question of how long does hair need to be for cornrows to stay in effectively. If you have never had them done before, know that they take some time and effort as well as money. To have them fall out right away is frustrating.

Typically a quality shop can get this look on your head as short as an inch long. But you also need to have some curl in your natural mane as well to do this. You can effectively put cornrows in straight locks this short but in most cases they will fall out.

Be prepared to sit while the stylist works on you if you have this short of hair. It takes a skilled stylist to get the job done and you are paying for their time. It is worth paying to get a stylist who knows what they are doing.

If you have a bit longer locks to work with you can expect that your rows will stay in better. This is because there is more of an anchor in your hair. You want to get a quality stylist no matter how long your hair is. Some recommend Caribbean salons as they are excellent and well skilled with this style.

The best length for rows is at least four inches. This is especially true for people with straighter styles naturally. As it grows it can look great for a lengthier period of time, the stylist can get the rows tighter and you will be able to wear them longer.

The look of cornrows is hot. You can have a great summer look or even winter rows that require little upkeep. Visit a stylist to see what they can do for you and trust the recommendations of friends. And make sure you seek out a stylist who knows what they are doing.

"Mommy"... "you have hair like me!"

Joe-Hannah Louisma's little girl, Gianna, was teased at school because she didn't have long straight hair.  When Gianna came home to mom and dad, they both tried to reassure her that - she and her hair where beautiful. But Giana would look to her mom's permed hair and say I want hair like yours Mommy. This struck a nerve with JoAnna. So one day Joe-Hannah went to the salon and cut it all off.

Her daughter was there with her and was so delighted. The little girl said "You look beautiful Mommy. You have hair like me!"

This is one great example of how we often teach better, through our actions,  instead of just words.  It is a beautiful message and I am so happy to see that the little girl in the end, talks about how much she loves her natural hair.

Rochelle Richie, how narrates this story for us, was told that she needed to get extensions in order to be and get ahead as a news reporter. She did it and saw her career grow, while wearing the hair extensions for 6 years. But as shown in the video below, she noticed how much damage the extensions caused her hair and just had enough. She cut her hair off and is proud to say that she loves her natural hair. And that she will be working as a reporter from now on with her natural hair.
